The 1960s was a historic decade for Brazil, when a powerful surge of social reform and creative energy was interrupted by the military coup of 1964, ushering in a 21-year dictatorship. The Music and Song Festivals of that era, many of them viewed by millions on TV, were an important artistic expression of the popular desire to create a new, democratic Brazil. The Festivals were a unique platform and showcase for the country’s best musical talent, bringing together songwriters, instrumentalists, singers, producers, and their audiences, who followed and cheered their favourite artists with the loyalty and passion of football supporters. Many of the now legendary names of Brazilian popular music burst onto the national scene through the Festivals, such as Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Marcos Valle, Elis Regina and others. This exciting new show will explore some of the finest creative moments of the Festivals, and convey something of their charged emotional atmosphere of political and cultural turbulence, in which so many original artists fought to be heard and recognised as the voice of the people and their country.
